So, this poem is the first one I've felt the need to put a disclaimer before. The disclaimer comes in two parts. First, this poem was written in 2017 during the lead-up to the 2018 elections. The narrator is intended to be a parody of the proto-fascists I found myself surrounded with at the time, and the poem reflects the anxieties that I felt at the time as a closeted trans woman. That the anxieties all came to pass is not a comfort. Please fight for trans folk. They'll come for you next.

America 2022

First they came for the Mexicans,
and I cheered--
Those filthy immigrants should have came
in the right way, the legal way.

Then they came for the Communists,
and I cheered--
Why do all those no good liberals
just want things handed to them.

Then they came for the Blacks,
and I cheered--
Those lazy no good welfare queens
should have gotten jobs.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I cheered--
Some whisper about controlling the world
but does faking it matter anymore?

Then they came for the Gays,
and I cheered
Why bother pretending? Fuck those gays
Those perverts. White Power Wooo!

Then we came for the Women,
and just had our way.
There's no way this can go wrong.
MAGA, Sieg Heil, Long Live the USA.

Then they came for me,
and I got my medal
and my job
at the gas house.
